Here's an event that we did in May (yes, it's been a busy summer!!)--a beyblade competition! We had dozens of competitors show up with their beyblades and their stadiums and boy, did we LET IT RIP! Winners from each age class walked away with the title as Beyblade Champion and a medal.

WOW! What a turn out! All the princesses and super heroes of Houston showed up for a fabulous party at Wonderwild. We started off the festivities with an Easter egg hunt.

Here's Princess Harriet with her bounty. She did not need the help of any Prince to get her eggs, thank you very much!

We also had face painting with Anita, who did some amazing work including this army inspired clone trooper.

Yoda (Fidel) was busy using his Jedi powers to create his balloon art.

Then Tom of Tom's Fun Band showed up and ROCKED THE HOUSE!!! Can you say BUBBLES?!!!

And we must thank SushiPOP for their amazing selection of goodies for our party!!! If you love sushi (and even if you don't--they have lots of non-sushi options), you have to try this place (located on Katy Freeway near Memorial City Mall).

We would also like to thank the amazing Green Plate Kids for their yummy desserts (which everyone ate first)! Now that's how I like to start my dinner.

And to top it all off, as kids left the party, we had Shannon from SnowDog Ice Cream in the parking lot helping kids to cool off with a scrumptious array of ice cream.

We have a new children's musician in town! His name is ANDYROO and the kids love to brush brush brush their teeth with him, play hopscotch and make noises like monkeys. He has played at the Houston Rodeo and appears frequently at the Children's Museum.

A Super Cake

Up up and away! It's an awesome super duper cake! Wow, this cake looks simple but it's very very difficult to get the fondant to look like fabric! No detail was overlooked--even the tray that the cake was on was wrapped in shiny red foil.

We're so happy for Kevin Peterson, a featured Houston artist at Wonderwild since Day One. Everyone at Wonderwild has been so enamored with his artwork (the term obsessed is more like it!). You can find more about Kevin here.

Here's what Kevin has to say about his own work:
My work is about the varied journeys we take through life. It's about growing up and living in a world that is broken. These paintings are about trauma, fear and loneliness and the strength that it takes to survive and thrive. They each contain the contrast of the untainted, young and innocent against a backdrop of a worn, ragged, and defiled world. Support versus restraint, bondage versus freedom, and tension versus slack are all themes that I often visit. My work deals with isolation, loneliness and longing teamed with a level of optimistic hope. Issues of race and the division of wealth have arisen in my recent work. This work deals with the idea of rigid boundaries, the hopeful breakdown of such restrictions, as well as questions about the forces that orchestrate our behavior.

Heights got a little cooler with the addition of Kraftsmen's new bakery on 22nd and Lamar. Chef Scott Tycer and his wife Annika have made the Kraftsmen in Montrose (outside dining area) and this new location two of the best places to eat with your kids in Houston. The place is airy and open, sort of like a hip place you'd find in Brooklyn, NY. This is a great place to bring the kids as they have a small area dedicated to the little ones. But better than that are their selection of baked goods that appeal to all ages. One tip: try the monkey bread. It's darn good. And if you have to share it with your kids, it breaks off easily into bite-sized pieces and doesn't get crumbs everywhere like muffins or croissants.

The last time I went to visit, two staff members were on the dock next to the bakery refurbishing old chairs. Like I said, it reminds me of the cool places in Brooklyn, NY.

Jedi Warrior Training

The first Jedi Warrior Training Club meeting was a supreme hit! We had over twenty-five boys show up with their light saber (some with two). Master Jedi Obi Wan Aaron showed the boys some basic light saber techniques. While practicing their steps, who should show up--DARTH VADER! The kids had a blast (literally) and so did the adults watching.

The next event features a guest appearance by the indomitable green one (Yoda) and is by RSVP only and is on Tuesday, May 25 at 4pm! Reserve your spot today! We only have a few training positions left! May the force be with you!

We have some amazing new art at Wonderwild--it's urban, architectural, a bit eerie, and believe it or not, done mostly with spray paint! Artist Daniel Angeliu made his mark on the white walls of the Wonderwild play area last week. It was fun to see him "tag" our walls with his unique brand.

And just yesterday, we were at Discovery Green for the electronic music festival and who should we see on the lawn of the green? But Daniel! His beautiful tree was done on a donated portion of a billboard!! Go Daniel!!!

You asked for it, here it is. Some pics of our space located at 707 N Shepherd Dr, #500, Houston TX 77007. We have birthday parties on the weekends and drop-in open play on the weekdays from 9am-7pm. We are usually open for holidays so come check us out and get ready to PLAY!!!

Art is an important part of everyone's lives, especially our kids at Wonderwild. We embrace art and artful living. We have professional artists showing in our reception--including Kevin Peterson, Tim Spencer, and Clarence Chun (in the hallway).

We value creativity and uncluttered play spaces. Here's a look at our toddler area and the ball pool filled with transparent "bubbles." The foam sculptures are all handmade in Europe and developed by child development experts and product designers--all to encourage creative free play.

Here's two of our staff members, Tasha and Insaff, working out on the jumping pillow! It's great exercise and keeps our employees in shape!

No play space is complete without a big 15 foot slide!

Here's the 3 story playscape for kids to climb, run and slide down on.

Inside the playscape, is the train track. The trains help kids to develop upper body strength--plus, it's a lot of fun!!

A look at our party room--a blank canvas for you to decorate with balloons, tablecloths and centerpieces if you so desire. During the weekdays, it's open for families to bring in their own food and drink and eat after a hard work out of playing.

My Art Gallery

We are so proud of our art students at Wonderwild!! From ages 2 to 8, our kids have done an amazing job following the works of famous artists but still keeping their own artwork unique and true to themselves! Above is work inspired by Piet Mondrian--we focused on bold colors and straight lines by doing some "tape painting." At the very end of our 10 week session, we will be holding a GALLERY SHOW for all the students to show off their amazing work! Sign up today for the next round of art classes starting March 22nd. Each student took their silhouette and then did some reverse watercolor painting--inspired by artist Mary Cassatt. Each masterpiece is worthy of being framed!

These kooky creatures had us exploring the art of sculpture and clay. We explored character and the development of a character--inspired by artist Takashi Murakami.

Brrrr! It's so cold outside in January! Here's your chance to warm up with us at Wonderwild.

On Thursday, January 28, we're hosting Tom of Tom's Fun Band, from 5-7pm. General admission is only $5 a kid (free for adults, members, and kids under 9 months) if you RSVP to wonderwhy@gowonderwild.com. Or you can pay $10 for walkers, $8 for pre-walkers at the door. Price includes general admission to the play area.

Tom was our main attraction at our grand opening Halloween party. An educator, licensed counselor, and a dad of twins, his usual musical performances specializes in science education. We're so glad to have him back for our January Jam!

An artist we love

Have you noticed the new art hanging in the "tunnel" leading to the play area at Wonderwild? Some people thought it was decorative strips of wall paper artfully cut into a collage, but no. It's a painting by fine artist Clarence Chun. He's Yale educated, but also graduated from the University of Houston's School of Art. With an MFA from New York's prestigious SVA, he's extremely well-rounded. Check out his work at Wonderwild closely the next time you are in. In the meantime, here's a taste of Clarence's other works and his artist statement below.

Artist Statement

Technology has shaped my life since I played my first pong video game. Technology has not only changed the way we receive and distribute information, but also how we interpret and see information. The speed at which images bombard us, whether in magazines, on television, or surfing the information super highway, alters how we absorb them. We are forced to develop a way to filter information, whether whole or fragmented. The relationship of speed, time, and memory fascinates me. My paintings bear witness to a particular moment in time and are memories of personal events. For example, I mentally record things, which captivates me during a dinner with my girlfriend. I take notice of the pattern on her dress or the salt and pepper shaker. My paintings and drawings also feed off of video games, the history of abstraction, Chinese landscapes, manga comics, anime and other sources. The medley of sources is orchestrated to create or reconstruct a personal environment within the painting in which a new kind of sense is made. An environment in which beautiful and the absurd, the sacred and the mundane cooperate.

Wonderwild is excited to announce that Leah White will be performing during the New Year's Eve Party in London on Thursday December 31st! Don't forget to buy your tickets in advance!

Leah is the winner of the Nickelodeon's Parent's Choice Award for Best Entertainer/ Music for 2009! Her music is the perfect alternative for original and rockin' children's music. It's not just for children, but for moms and dads too! Check out her latest album released in Sept. 2009, A White Christmas. It's classic Christmas music that you've never heard before and inspired/ written based on Mom's feedback on what they feel is the essence of a modern family's holiday season.

We're excited to introduce classes for kids at Wonderwild starting in January. Our class schedule is here. And for an introductory time, we're offering a FREE CLASS PASS! Come PLAY at Wonderwild Friday, November 27, to work off the turkey gut and pumpkin pie thighs! Bring your whole family and have fun playing together. By the way, we will be open for open play every weekday in November from 9am-7pm, except for Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26.

$10 for walkers, $8 pre-walkers; adults, infants 6 mos and under, and members are free.

Or take advantage of our SHOPand Drop program Nov. 27. From 9:30am-12:30pm, we’ll watch your kids and make sure they have a great time while you get a head start on holiday shopping! We’ll do an art project, groove to some music, and of course, play in our play area. Walkers only. Child must be potty-trained. Must bring own lunch.

Wonderwild Halloween Parties!

The weather looked rather frightful on Thursday but we had no fear as we started setting up for our Friday night festival! Over 125 people packed into our 7200 square feet of space. Tom's Fun Band http://www.tomsfunband.com did a stupendous job performing for all the kids and then Tyagaraja closed the evening by taking it to another level for the enjoyment of the adults (while the kids played on and on and on).

Saturday we had an equal amount of people but a much younger crowd. There was free pizza. Awesome coffee from our favorite coffee shop in the heights ANTIDOTE! Drinks, pumpkin cookies and cheesy popcorn from Whole Foods. And free frozen yogurt from Berripop! At the end of the evening, we gave out Wonderwild bags with free Wonderwild tshirts and a stuffed animal friend to go trick or treating with.

We hope everyone had a great time!! The only tears we witnessed were from kids who didn't want to leave at the end of the evening.

Currently, Wonderwild is closed in order to install some new equipment.

Hope to see you all soon for our first day of open play, Monday, November 9 (projected date)!

Here's an artist rendering of the Wonderwild space. Imagine yourself standing in the 4200+ square feet play area, looking back into the party rooms and the hallway leading back to the lobby. You'll notice a garage door that opens up into the party room, giving us the option to close for privacy or open for that block-party feel.

Of course, the space won't look exactly like this right when we open, but we don't think the kiddies will care one bit!!

When will you OPEN?

We get this question texted to us, emailed, through phone calls, smoke signals, you name it! We're experiencing some small speed bumps in construction (nothing we can't fix) and so we're now saying October rather than September.

Looking at the bright side, that gives us more time to prepare for our kids to play in a safe, clean and creative environment!

We can't wait to open! Thanks to all the moms for your encouragement!

Kid-powered choo choos

We're so excited to offer our kids (3+) a way to a) ride the train b) get some exercise and c) have a whole lot of fun!! It's also a great way for parents to get some exercise as well (if you want to run after them as they go around and around the track). The train track is built inside the playscape in an enclosed area for extra added safety.

She can sing, too

Wonderwild is proud to present our artist-in-residence Lisa Marie Godfrey. We think the world of her and can't wait to unveil her installation.

"Drawn from conventions of anime, underground comics and the pink-and-turquoise universe of fairy princess toys, Godfrey's angst is that of an adolescent, looking backwards at childhood through the lens of grown-up anxieties. It's the glass-unicorn effect, emphasizing the purity and fragility of childish innocence." - Bill Davenport

Lisa Marie Godfrey (born August 24, 1981) is an American dreamy-folk singer and fine artist based in Houston, TX, where she was born. She studied at The Glassel School of Art in Houston, where she focused on painting, drawing and printmaking. Her works on paper are often combined with small sculptures, found objects, and direct wall painting. She likes to create site specific installations where a personal narrative is always present whether speaking through self representational characters or dreamy landscapes.

Things from the past such as vintage cabinet card photographs, children's books, letters and postcards serve as inspiration as she tries to analyze and understand the past, present, her dreams and reality. Lisa has exhibited in Houston, Austin, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Ottawa and Montreal; and is scheduled for a solo show at Domy Books, Austin, December of 2009. Besides expressing herself visually, she is a self-taught guitarist and singer who started a solo music project titled Air Castle Mystery Solved in March of 2009. Her music has been described as "A cautious relief, like a foot in a cloud..." She is planning to release her first album in November of 2009.

Cheese, please!

Cheese flavored ice cream? What about a cheesy chocolate bar? Okay, well, if we can't have that, how about a big piece of cheese that the kids can play on? Right on!! Wonderwild will have a collection of equipment designed by child development experts and product designers. When you have a combination like that, it can only result in a lot of fun that's also educational!

Like Grandma's Feather Bed But Better

Who doesn't like jumping on a bed? When was the last time YOU jumped on a bed?!

Well, your chance to do it is coming up soon. We'll be the FIRST in Texas to install this inflatable bed-buster: the Jumpoline. Sort of like a trampoline and an inflatable combined. But it's better. With a trampoline it's difficult to get more than one person jumping without throwing off all the rest. With the Jumpoline, you can have multiple people of various sizes using it quite safely.

I've seen infants who can barely crawl sit on the Jumpoline laughing and giggling while their mothers bounced them up and down. It was the cutest sight.

The above is a picture of an outdoor version. Ours will be indoors and over 28 feet long.

Needless to say, it's going to be great fun for the kids--and a great work out for parents too!

Castles in the air, playscapes in the sky! Our playsystem design is now being finalized by one of the top designers in the business who now lives in the UK. It will stand at 15 feet tall, not too tall to lose the kids, but high enough for them to feel like kings and queens.

Children will have two types of slides to come down off of the playscape, and inside, they'll find lots of challenges--climbing, jumping, running, crawling.

And to top it all off, we have the city's first indoor train track, where kids use their own energy to get each car to move on the tracks! It's a great way for kids to exercise and have fun at the same time.

We showed the images to a few kids and the response was unanimous--we all couldn't wait for the system to be built!
